On Friday afternoon, a drop of sauce lands right on your lapel. Saturday morning is your close friend's wedding. You run to the shop near home, and the first thing out of your mouth is not "will it be ready in time?" but "how much does it cost to dry clean a suit?" One shop quotes one number, the shop next door quotes another, and nobody explains why they differ. This article explains why, with a reference price range so you know what you are paying for.

Note: the prices below are only a commonly seen reference range in Ho Chi Minh City; every shop, every time of year and every fabric will differ. This is not Mon Amie's price list.

Quick answer

Dry cleaning or steam cleaning a single suit jacket typically ranges from a few tens of thousands to a little over a hundred thousand dong at an ordinary laundry; a two-piece suit is around one to two hundred thousand dong; specialist dry cleaners or premium fabric cost more. Spot treatment of stains, rush service and special fabrics usually carry a surcharge.

Reference prices for cleaning a suit

Item Standard laundry Specialist dry cleaner, premium fabric
Single suit jacket about VND 50,000 – 150,000 about VND 120,000 – 250,000
Suit trousers about VND 30,000 – 80,000 about VND 60,000 – 120,000
Two-piece suit (jacket and trousers) about VND 100,000 – 250,000 about VND 200,000 – 400,000
Waistcoat (three-piece suit) usually adds about VND 30,000 – 80,000 usually adds about VND 60,000 – 120,000
Steaming and re-pressing (no dry cleaning) usually lower than dry cleaning usually lower than dry cleaning
Special stain removal about VND 20,000 – 100,000 per stain, depending on the stain depends on the type of stain and the fabric

These figures are rounded and can vary widely. The surest approach is to ask for a written price list, or send a message, before you hand over your garment.

Why prices differ between shops

  1. Method. Dry cleaning with solvent costs more than washing with water; steaming and re-pressing is usually cheaper.
  2. Material. High-Super wool, cashmere, silk and silk blends need gentle handling and so cost more.
  3. Construction. Three-piece suits, double-breasted jackets and multi-layer linings take more work to finish.
  4. Level of finishing. Pressing the shape, setting the lapel and shaping the shoulder, whether by machine or by hand, all affect the price.
  5. Speed. Same-day cleaning or pickup and delivery usually carries a surcharge.
  6. Location and reputation of the shop. Central shops that specialize in cleaning made-to-measure garments usually charge more.

For the process behind the number, you can read the article what is steam cleaning for a suit jacket.

Items easily overlooked when asking for a price

  • Stain-treatment surcharge: red wine, coffee, grease and ink are harder to remove than ordinary sweat.
  • Special-fabric surcharge: silk, cashmere, velvet, embellished fabrics.
  • Rush fee: same-day pickup, or within 24 hours.
  • Delivery fee: if the shop collects and delivers to your door.
  • Compensation policy: if the garment is damaged, how far the shop takes responsibility. Ask in advance.

Tips to reduce how often you send your suit out (and keep it lasting longer)

Dry cleaning too often wears the fabric down. A few small habits help you send your suit out less often while it stays clean:

  • Hang the jacket in the open air after each wearing, on a wide-shouldered hanger, so moisture and odor can dissipate.
  • Let the suit rest at least a day between wearings; ideally, have at least two suits in rotation.
  • Use a soft-bristle brush to brush off dust along the direction of the weave.
  • Deal with stains early: blot gently (don't rub) with a clean cloth, don't add soapy water, then take it to the shop right away.
  • Steam instead of dry cleaning when the jacket is only wrinkled, not dirty. For mild cases, you can look at how to wash a suit at home.
  • Use a breathable garment bag for storage; avoid sealed plastic bags because they trap moisture.

Example: the cost of cleaning a suit over a year

Say you have two two-piece suits that you rotate for work, and each dry clean costs about VND 200,000 (the middle of the reference range above).

  • Cleaning only when needed, three times a year per suit: 2 suits × 3 cleanings × VND 200,000 = VND 1,200,000 per year.
  • Cleaning once a month for both suits: 24 cleanings × VND 200,000 = VND 4,800,000 per year, which equals the starting price of an Essential-line made-to-measure suit, and the fabric wears out faster too.

For the same question, "how much does suit dry cleaning cost," the real answer lies in how often, not just in the unit price. Cleaning at the right time is both cheaper and kinder to the fabric.

When to clean a suit and when not to

Situation What to do
Only lightly wrinkled, not dirty Hang in the open air; steam or press through a pressing cloth
Smells of sweat, dusty after many wearings Dry clean or steam clean
Clear stain (wine, coffee, sauce) Take it to the shop early and say what kind of stain it is
Worn rarely but stored for a long time Steam lightly, then store in a breathable bag; dry cleaning isn't necessarily needed
Worn all week Dry clean when it looks dirty, and rest the suit between wearings

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to dry clean a suit?

At an ordinary shop, dry cleaning a single suit jacket typically runs from a few tens of thousands to a little over a hundred thousand dong; a two-piece suit is around one to two hundred thousand dong. Specialist dry cleaners or premium fabric cost more. Ask for the price list clearly before you hand it over.

How much does it cost to dry clean a suit if there is an old stain?

On top of the cleaning price, old stains are usually charged an extra treatment fee, depending on the type of stain and the fabric. Point out the stain to the shop as soon as you hand the garment over and ask about the surcharge in advance.

How much does steam cleaning a suit cost compared with dry cleaning?

Steaming and re-pressing is usually cheaper than dry cleaning because no solvent is used; but steaming only suits a jacket that is merely wrinkled or has a slight smell, not yet dirty.

How much does steam cleaning a suit jacket cost, and should you do it often?

The price depends on the shop, but you should not clean it often. A suit you wear regularly should be dry cleaned only a few times a year, or when it looks dirty, and be rested between wearings. The detailed process is in the article what is steam cleaning for a suit jacket.

Is it cheaper to wash a suit at home or take it to a shop?

Washing at home is cheaper on paper, but only suits light stains and jackets with little structure. For a suit with interfacing and shoulder pads, taking it to a shop is still safer; if you are worried about the fee, you can handle wrinkles yourself with steam and send it out only when truly necessary. Many people ask how much suit dry cleaning costs but forget to count the price of a jacket that has shrunk or gone shiny at the shoulder.

Making your suit last is the surest way to save

The cleaning price is only a small part of the cost of keeping a suit; most of it lies in the quality of the fabric and the original cut. Good fabric, a fit that suits you and wearing in rotation mean less cleaning and a suit that still looks good.
