What Is Lyocell? Wood-Based Cellulose Fibre, Modern Feel

Lyocell is a wood-pulp cellulose fibre made in a closed loop and fully biodegradable: cool, fluid, colourfast. Mon Amie explains its modern appeal.

Lyocell is a fabric spun from natural cellulose fibre sourced from wood, produced in a closed-loop, environmentally responsible process, and fully biodegradable. Tencel may be the trade name most people recognise, but lyocell is the generic name for the entire family of these fibres — and understanding lyocell explains why modern menswear is moving steadily towards materials that are both refined and responsible. Mon Amie shares a tailor's perspective.

What lyocell is, and what it fundamentally offers

Lyocell fibre is drawn from wood cellulose — usually eucalyptus, oak or birch — using an organic solvent in a closed cycle, with over 99% of that solvent recovered and reused, so almost nothing is discharged into the environment. Compared with earlier-generation cellulose fibres such as viscose, lyocell is cleaner in production and considerably stronger in wear. Four qualities stand out:

  • Naturally soft: the fibre is fine and smooth, giving genuine comfort against the skin.
  • Exceptionally breathable: it absorbs and releases moisture readily, keeping the body dry and at ease.
  • Fluid drape, cool hand: it falls softly and feels cool on the skin, lending an elegant silhouette.
  • Durable and shape-holding: the fibre is strong, so garments hold their form, resist creasing and keep their colour over time.

Six reasons lyocell feels distinctly modern

Modern luxury usually begins with the way a cloth moves — and lyocell demonstrates this better than most:

  • Cool against the skin: the smooth fibre surface reduces friction and feels cool and gentle.
  • Optimal breathability: the fibre structure lets air circulate, keeping the body dry and comfortable.
  • Natural drape: the soft, natural fall lets the garment move fluidly and elegantly with every step.
  • Colourfast and crease-resistant: it holds colour well and resists creasing thanks to a stable, resilient fibre structure.
  • Environmentally responsible: closed-loop production, non-toxic, and biodegradable.
  • Versatile and adaptable: at home across many styles, from the office to the weekend to long journeys.

Why lyocell deserves a place in your wardrobe

  • It delivers outstanding comfort in every kind of weather.
  • It keeps your clothes cool, dry and pleasant to wear.
  • It reflects a sustainable, responsible approach to dressing.
  • Its beautiful drape flatters the figure and adds elegance.
  • It suits both the office and a more relaxed, resort register.
  • It is an ideal choice for a modern, considered style.

Where lyocell shows at its best

  • Suit: lyocell-blend cloths give a light suit with fine drape, ideal for the modern office.
  • Shirt: cool, crease-resistant, with depth of colour — comfortable from morning to evening.
  • Trouser: tailored trousers that fall straight, flatter the leg and breathe well.
  • Travel wear: absorbs and releases moisture quickly, easy to care for on business trips and holidays.
  • Smart casual: polos and weekend pieces that stay refined while feeling relaxed.

The qualities of lyocell, in summary

  • Naturally cool: keeps the body comfortable even on hot days.
  • Fast moisture release: absorbs and releases moisture better than many conventional fibres.
  • Holds its shape: the strong lyocell fibre keeps a garment's form for years.
  • Light yet substantial: lighter than cotton, yet with a rich hand to wear.
  • Sustainable: an intelligent choice for a modern, greener way of living.
  • Refined appearance: a smooth surface with a gentle sheen and a quietly luxurious look.

Modern materials still call for classical finishing: natural horn buttons that are durable and refined, fine silk lining that adds strength and comfort, and meticulous, sturdy stitching in every detail — the finishing standard Mon Amie applies to everything we make.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

With lyocell-blend cloths, Mon Amie's artisans pay particular attention to the balance between drape and structure: blended with wool or cotton in the right proportion, lyocell yields a garment that moves fluidly while keeping a disciplined line. We often recommend it to gentlemen who want a modern, unencumbered look without stepping away from the elegance of proper tailoring.
