What Is Camel Hair? The Classic Overcoat Fibre Explained

What camel hair is, and why its distinctive golden-brown tone and light warmth made it the classic overcoat cloth. Mon Amie explains in detail.

Poster No. 251 — Tailor Library collection

Camel hair is the fibre of the Bactrian camel, gathered by hand from the fine hair of the animal's neck, chest and shoulders. It is a natural fibre with a hollow core — light, strong and remarkably warm — which is why the camel-coloured polo coat became an enduring emblem of the menswear wardrobe. Mon Amie tells the story of this cloth through a tailor's eyes.

What camel hair is, and how it is gathered

Unlike sheep or goats, which are shorn, the Bactrian camels of Central Asia — chiefly Mongolia and Inner Mongolia — shed their undercoat naturally each spring. Herders comb by hand to collect the finest hair from the neck, chest and shoulders, then separate the soft down hair from the coarse outer guard hair. Only that soft down goes into fine tailoring cloths.

The hollow fibre core — an inheritance from an animal that endures hot days and freezing nights on the steppe — is precisely what makes camel hair insulate so naturally: excellent warmth at a featherweight.

Four core qualities of camel hair

  • Warm yet light: it insulates effectively at a very low weight, comfortable through a long day.
  • Naturally soft: fine, resilient fibre giving a gentle, luxurious surface.
  • Durable and pill-resistant: high durability with little pilling, holding shape and beauty for years.
  • Excellent thermal regulation: it absorbs moisture and breathes naturally, keeping you dry and warm.

Thanks to that thermal regulation, a camel hair overcoat is not only warm outdoors but never stifling when you step inside — something many heavy synthetic cloths cannot manage.

Why camel hair deserves your attention

First, the way it wears: natural warmth without heaviness, a garment that holds its shape and falls handsomely. Then the colour — camel hair's characteristic golden brown carries a classical elegance, pairs easily with navy, grey and white, and has not gone out of fashion in more than a century. Practically speaking, it is a durable cloth that attracts little dust and is easier to care for than many wools, staying with you across many seasons. And finally, choosing camel hair expresses the taste of a man who understands real value — distinction that never needs display.

Six reasons camel hair endures

  1. Natural colour — a warm golden brown, refined and easy to combine, a shade that never dates.
  2. Warm and light — the hollow fibre core insulates superbly at a featherweight.
  3. Enduring durability — strong, resilient fibre keeps garments in shape and resists creasing.
  4. Breathable and dry — it absorbs and releases moisture quickly for lasting comfort.
  5. Natural luxury — a fine surface with a soft sheen, distinguished without display.
  6. A long-term investment — a classic material of timeless value, worth owning for many years.

Where camel hair shows at its best

This cloth gives its full measure in outerwear and cold-weather accessories:

  • Overcoat — the classic being the double-breasted polo coat in camel
  • Blazer — warm and soft in a way an ordinary wool blazer is not
  • Trouser — camel hair trousers bring a texture and colour all their own to autumn and winter
  • Scarf — soft, warm, with a beautiful natural golden-brown tone
  • Accessories — bags, hats and finishing pieces

At Mon Amie, a camel hair coat is finished with natural horn buttons that are durable and refined, fine silk lining that adds strength and comfort, and meticulous, sturdy stitching in every detail — because a precious material deserves craftsmanship to match.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

With camel hair, we usually advise clients to keep the natural golden brown rather than choose a dyed version — because, as the trade has it, natural warmth becomes timeless when colour and cloth are one and the same. In the cutting, camel hair calls for careful attention to the grain so the fronts keep their characteristic soft fall; in return, you have a coat you can wear for fifteen or twenty years and still look entirely right.
