Poster No. 248 — Tailor Library collection

Tencel is a cloth made from regenerated cellulose fibre derived from eucalyptus wood, produced through an environmentally responsible process that yields a soft, smooth, cool material with natural drape. Among the textile industry's greener fibres, tencel is regarded as the benchmark for both wearing comfort and sustainability — and Mon Amie would like to explain why it appears more and more often in made-to-measure work.

What tencel is, and its core values

Tencel is in fact the trade name for lyocell fibre produced by Lenzing of Austria, using responsibly grown eucalyptus and a closed-loop solvent process in which nearly all solvent is recovered and reused. The result is a fine fibre with a surface smoother than cotton, offering four notable qualities:

  • Naturally soft: a smooth, gentle surface that feels pleasant against the skin.
  • Outstanding breathability: it absorbs and releases moisture well, keeping you dry and comfortable.
  • Beautiful, refined drape: its natural fall creates an elegant, softly luxurious line.
  • Durable and stable: it holds its shape, resists creasing and pilling, and keeps its colour over time.

Six things tencel brings to made-to-measure

  • Soft, smooth and cool: gentle to the touch, smooth and cool on the skin through a long day.
  • Natural drape: the cloth falls beautifully, creating soft folds and fluid movement as you walk.
  • Breathable and dry: the fibre structure releases moisture quickly and keeps the body dry.
  • Shape-holding and crease-resistant: it keeps its line and limits wrinkling, so a garment stays correct.
  • Deep, lasting colour: it takes dye well and holds it, never fading and always looking refined — which is why so many tencel cloths have such beautiful colour depth.
  • Sustainable and safe: natural in origin, with a green production process that is safe for the wearer.

For the tailor, a fluid cloth like tencel is an interesting problem: the softer the material, the more control is needed for the garment to keep its shape — soft, but never shapeless. This is where craftsmanship shows its difference most clearly.

Why tencel deserves your attention

  • It feels soft and cool against the skin.
  • It gives a garment beautiful drape and fluid movement.
  • It signals a wearer's refinement through the quality of the cloth.
  • It limits creasing, cares for easily and holds its shape.
  • It suits hot, humid weather and an active working life.
  • It is a sustainable, environmentally responsible choice.

Where tencel shows itself best

  • Shirts: where tencel shines most — soft, cool, crease-resistant, with deep colour.
  • Suits and trousers: tencel-blend cloths give a light, well-draping garment in a relaxed modern style.
  • Travel wear: for business trips and holidays — quick to release moisture and easy to look after.
  • Smart casual: polos and weekend pieces that keep an air of refinement.

Six reasons to bring tencel into your wardrobe

  • Naturally soft: a smooth hand achieved without aggressive chemical treatment.
  • Breathable and moisture-releasing: quick to absorb, exceptionally cool and dry.
  • Beautiful drape and movement: a soft fall that raises the whole line of a garment.
  • Shape-holding and crease-resistant: keeps you correct and is easy to maintain.
  • Gentle and safe: natural in origin, kind to skin and to the environment.
  • Refined and versatile: at home from the office to everyday life.

And as with every piece bearing the Mon Amie label, good material must be matched by proper finishing: durable natural horn buttons, a smooth lining in fine silk, and meticulous, refined stitching in every detail.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

Our artisans often reach for tencel and tencel blends for clients who want clothing that feels like wearing almost nothing: light, cool, moving with the body. The secret lies in the cutting — a fluid cloth demands precise lines and careful edge finishing to keep its shape clean. Done properly, a made-to-measure tencel shirt or trouser gives a comfort that ready-to-wear rarely matches.
