What Super 100s wool is, and why 18.5-micron fibre is considered the balance point between fineness, durability and value for everyday suits.

Super 100s is a grade of wool fibre measuring roughly 18.5 microns in diameter, widely regarded as the quality level that balances fineness, durability and everyday versatility. If you need a suit you will wear often — to the office, to meetings, on the move — Super 100s is usually the sensible answer before you start considering higher numbers. Mon Amie explains why.

What Super 100s means on the wool scale

The "Super" number is the grading system for the fineness of worsted wool fibre: the higher the number, the finer the fibre. Super 100s corresponds to a fibre diameter of about 18.5 microns — considerably finer than ordinary wool, fine enough to give a smooth cloth surface, yet not so fine as to become delicate in the manner of Super 150s and above. This is the sweet spot that mills and tailors around the world agree upon for clothes worn regularly.

There is a saying in the trade worth considering: balance is usually more useful than extremes. Super 100s is that philosophy made cloth.

Four core qualities of Super 100s

  • Smooth and comfortable: the fine fibre gives a smooth, sleek cloth that is pleasant against the skin.
  • Breathable and easy: a sound fibre structure lets the cloth breathe and handle moisture comfortably.
  • Durable and stable: high durability, good shape retention and reduced creasing in wear.
  • Broadly versatile: suited to many purposes, from the office to formal events to daily travel.

Why Super 100s matters to the man who wears suits

First, it offers a genuinely fine experience that remains easy to live with day to day — you need not treat the suit as delicately as you would a superfine cloth. It helps the garment hold its shape, stand cleanly and crease less, expressing refinement through a smooth, elegant surface. Super 100s suits many settings and many styles, making it the safe choice for most wearers, and it balances three things that rarely coincide: appearance, durability and sensible cost.

Put another way: if your suit has to work as hard as you do, Super 100s is a dependable partner.

Six reasons Super 100s remains a favourite

  1. A smooth, refined surface — a measured fineness that looks handsome without becoming fragile.
  2. Breathable and comfortable — the fine weave breathes, regulates temperature and stays comfortable all day.
  3. Good shape retention — a stable fibre structure keeps the garment standing cleanly and resists sagging.
  4. High durability — good-quality wool holds both colour and fibre for years of wear.
  5. Easy to combine and wear — appropriate in many situations, easy to coordinate, naturally elegant.
  6. Balanced value — quality that justifies the price, an intelligent and effective investment.

Super 100s cloth also has good resilience: after a day's wear, simply hanging it overnight lets the cloth return to its original smoothness — worth a great deal to anyone who travels frequently.

Where Super 100s shows at its best

  • Suit — its home ground: business suits and year-round suits
  • Blazer — a separate blazer for business casual settings
  • Trouser — tailored trousers that stand cleanly and crease little
  • Overcoat — trim outerwear for cooler climates
  • Travel wear — clothes for travel and business trips, thanks to its crease recovery

At Mon Amie, a Super 100s suit is finished with natural horn buttons, fine silk lining and meticulous stitching in every detail — because a well-balanced cloth deserves complete attention.
