The pocket opening is the mouth of the front pocket on a pair of trousers — where your hand goes in and out every day. It is a small detail, easily overlooked when choosing trousers, yet it has a large bearing on the look, the function and the life of the whole garment. A properly cut pocket opening lies flat along the hip, neither gaping nor bulging — and it is one of the quickest ways to read a tailor's skill.
What a pocket opening is, and why it deserves attention
The pocket mouth is usually cut on a slant or along the side seam, depending on the style. On ready-made trousers this is the spot most likely to betray you: if the hip measurement does not match the wearer, the opening gapes, leaving two open gashes at the hips — from across a room, the trousers already look tight or clumsily cut.
On a made-to-measure trouser, the tailor controls this detail from the first measurement through to the fitting. The value of a good pocket opening rests on four points:
- Refined appearance: a clean, softly curved mouth that keeps the hip area tidy and continuous with the line of the trouser.
- Easy function: comfortable to use, the hand entering and leaving without catching or dragging the waistband askew.
- Real durability: proper construction lets the opening take thousands of uses without stretching, sagging or puckering.
- Craft value: measuring and cutting a detail this small with precision is the mark of a serious tailor.
Why so small a detail decides so large an impression
The pocket mouth is a point of daily contact — you slip your hands in while waiting, while being photographed, while talking. It shapes the silhouette and the trimness of the hip: a gaping pocket makes the hip look wider than it is, a flat one keeps the leg line continuous and slim.
It is also where cutting and finishing show. Behind the opening sit the pocket bag, the facing and the reinforcement stitching — things the wearer never sees but feels, in the smoothness of the hand entering and in the durability after years of wear. A small detail, and a large impression.
Where the pocket opening appears
Nearly every trouser in a man's wardrobe has one, each with its own demands:
- Everyday trousers: function first, with a comfortable opening for constant use.
- Suit trousers: flatness first — trousers worn under a jacket need a genuinely clean hip.
- Formal dress trousers: a discreet mouth, finely stitched, all but invisible on the line of the leg.
- Casual trousers: the pocket style may be more relaxed, but the reinforcement still matters.
Six marks of a good pocket opening
When trying on trousers — bespoke or ready-made — you can check them against the six points we use in the Mon Amie workshop:
- Lies flat: the opening sits in agreement with the side seam and hip, without gaping when you stand straight.
- Sensible curve: the cut curves naturally, so the hand enters without the cloth breaking into creases.
- Correct depth: deep enough to be useful, with nothing inside showing its outline.
- Firm reinforcement: the ends of the opening — the points of greatest strain — are well secured and not prone to tearing.
- Refined finishing: even, clean stitching with the threads neatly and precisely concealed.
- Holds the silhouette: no bulging or dragging, so the hip stays trim even with something in the pocket.
If a trouser meets all six, the rest of it is almost certainly made with equal care — no one fusses over a pocket mouth and then grows careless at the waistband or the pleats.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
In the Mon Amie workshop our tailors remind one another that function only counts when it does not spoil the line. Each pocket opening is set to the client's true hip measurement and tried on the body before finishing, so when you put your hands in your pockets the line of the trouser stays intact. That is the difference between a trouser made for you and a stock size altered afterwards.
Try a trouser measured for you alone
Next time you try on trousers, look first at both hips — the pocket openings will tell you the truth about them.
