What is a refit? It is the process of trying a garment on and reassessing it as a whole after preliminary alterations, in order to find what is still short of ideal and refine it to completion. If the first fitting is a draft, the refit is the final read-through before printing — the moment when the smallest faults are seen and settled.
What is a refit, and which areas are examined
During a refit, the tailor does not look at isolated points; he reviews six areas in order, from the top down:
- Shoulder: the drape, width and position of the shoulder — the foundation of the entire jacket.
- Chest: how closely it sits, how comfortable it feels, how balanced it looks.
- Waist: the waist shape, the closeness and the curve through the body.
- Sleeve: length, closeness and the point at which the sleeve falls.
- Seat and rise: how the trouser sits over the seat, the height of the rise and the balance front to back.
- Length: jacket and trouser lengths, and the overall proportion between them.
What matters is that these areas are connected: adjusting a shoulder can change the chest, taking in a waist can alter how the fronts hang. The refit is precisely where you check whether every earlier adjustment still speaks to the others.
What a refit gives you: overall balance
A refit brings overall balance, ensuring every detail connects, so the garment suits the body, the style and the occasion completely. Four core benefits:
- Overall balance: the upper and lower halves are harmonious and connect naturally.
- The highest accuracy: small remaining faults are found and corrected thoroughly.
- A better garment: a finer silhouette, greater comfort, more elegance.
- The bespoke standard upheld: the handwork is honoured, and the time and cost invested are justified.
In traditional tailoring, a suit usually goes through at least two or three fittings. To skip the refit is to accept the risk that a small fault from the first fitting is still there on delivery day.
Six reasons a refit can save a garment
- It finds what is not yet right: small faults invisible when standing still appear in movement or from another angle — a refit catches them early.
- It ties the garment together: every detail must support the others; the refit ensures the top and bottom agree.
- It improves comfort: a garment is only truly good when the wearer forgets it and attends to more important things.
- It flatters the figure and holds the style: a refit brings out the body's strengths while keeping the intended character intact.
- It extends the garment's life: correct adjustment relieves stress on seams and details and limits stretching.
- It repays the time invested: a small investment of time bought for a fit that lasts years.
Where a refit shows, and how the tailor works
A refit is most apparent in the jacket as a whole, in the shape of the body, in the balance of the trousers, in how the suit feels to wear, and in the overall silhouette. A proper refit therefore involves very specific professional steps:
- A complete inspection: the garment is examined from every angle and in several postures — standing, seated, arms raised, walking.
- Objective assessment: the client's own impressions are heard and the garment is observed on the body, not judged from measurements alone.
- Refined adjustment: small corrections that make a large difference.
- Attention to proportion: every part is kept in balance with the rest.
- Fidelity to the original intent: the agreed design is never changed, only perfected.
- A complete experience: a good garment leaves the wearer confident, comfortable and well remembered.
The result of a successful refit is underwritten by the finishing itself: durable natural horn buttons, fine and comfortable silk lining, and meticulous, sound stitching in every detail.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
At Mon Amie we often remind one another that the best alteration sometimes begins by looking at the whole thing once more. The refit is the last step towards a finished garment, and the moment a tailor's experience shows most plainly — knowing what to touch and, more importantly, what to leave alone. Because every client's measurements are kept for life and covered by our alteration guarantee, a refit at Mon Amie is limited not by the delivery date but by the standard of a genuine fit.
