When you order a suit jacket online, the size box offers only S, M, L, XL and XXL. No box asks how wide your shoulders are, how thick or thin your chest is, or how long your arms are. You look down at the weight chart beside it and wonder: what weight is a size XL suit jacket? There is an answer, but it holds true only for a certain group of people. This article gives you the conversion chart, along with what the chart does not tell you.

The short answer

A size XL suit jacket is typically for someone weighing around 72–80 kg, about 1.71–1.77 m tall, with a chest of around 104 cm (equivalent to European size 52). Size L is typically 66–73 kg and XXL 79–87 kg. These are reference figures for a balanced build; the shoulders and chest are what decide your real size.

What weight is a size XL suit jacket? Conversion chart from S to XXL

Letter size EU size Chest Reference height Reference weight
S 46 92 cm 1.60 – 1.66 m 54 – 60 kg
M 48 96 cm 1.64 – 1.70 m 60 – 66 kg
L 50 100 cm 1.68 – 1.74 m 66 – 73 kg
XL 52 104 cm 1.71 – 1.77 m 72 – 80 kg
XXL 54 108 cm 1.74 – 1.80 m 79 – 87 kg

You will notice that the weight ranges overlap: 72–73 kg could be either L or XL. This overlap is not an error in the chart; it reflects reality. Two people who both weigh 73 kg can wear two different sizes depending on height and build. A more detailed chart is in the article men's suit size chart by height and weight.

Why isn't weight enough to choose a suit size?

Weight measures total body mass, while suit size measures the chest and shoulders. Take two men who both weigh 78 kg:

  • A man 1.80 m tall, broad-shouldered, with little belly fat wears XL or XXL, but with a slim torso.
  • A man 1.70 m tall with a full belly wears XL because of the belly, but his shoulders only fit size L. The jacket will be loose at the shoulders, or tight at the belly.

So a weight chart gives only a rough direction. When you fall between two sizes, choose by the shoulders, because the body of a jacket can be taken in, but the shoulders cannot be let out.

Three body types who all wear size XL

  • Athletic build, broad chest, small belly, 1.78 m tall and 80 kg: XL fits the shoulders and chest, and usually only a little needs to be taken in at the waist.
  • A fuller belly, 1.72 m tall and 80 kg: the belly forces you to choose XL, but the shoulders are only about size L. The jacket will have excess shoulder, so this is the case where made-to-measure makes the clearest difference.
  • Tall and slim, 1.85 m tall and 76 kg: the weight is only at L level, but the height means you need a longer body and sleeves, that is, a long XL or an L length in the R, S, L system.

The same number on the scale, three body types, three different decisions. That is why a weight chart should be used only as a starting point.

Why does size XL differ from brand to brand?

This is why many men buy suit jackets online and end up disappointed:

  • Asian brands cut smaller. An Asian XL is often equivalent to a European L, because the cut is based on a smaller frame.
  • Different fits. Slim fit is closer, regular fit is roomier: the same XL feels quite different.
  • Different measurements. Some brands list flat garment measurements (taken with the jacket laid out on a table), while others list body measurements.

If you buy online, ignore the letter size and look at the jacket's real measurement chart: chest width (measured flat, then doubled), shoulder width, body length, sleeve length. Compare with a jacket that already fits you well, then choose.

Garment measurements for size XL to compare when buying online

If the seller's page has a garment measurement chart, compare it with the reference figures below for size XL (equivalent to European size 52):

Garment measurement (flat, jacket laid on a table) Reference for XL
Chest width About 55–57 cm
Shoulder width About 47–48 cm
Body length About 76–79 cm
Sleeve length About 63–65 cm

These figures are only for orientation, because every brand cuts differently and slim fit jackets are usually smaller. The surest way is still to lay the jacket you already wear comfortably on a table, measure these four numbers and compare.

How to measure at home instead of guessing

  1. Chest: the tape goes across the fullest point, flat across the back, with your arms hanging naturally. Halve the figure to get the EU size.
  2. Shoulders: from one shoulder tip to the other, across the back.
  3. Height: choose length code S, R or L if the brand lists it.
  4. A jacket that fits you well: lay it flat and measure across the chest, across the shoulders and the body length. This is the most reliable reference standard.

To read the symbols on a jacket label carefully, the article European men's suit sizes 44–58 explains the numbers and letters one by one.

When should you be measured instead of guessing?

  • You fall between two sizes, especially when your weight is in the overlapping range.
  • Your shoulders and belly do not match: small shoulders with a large belly, or the reverse.
  • Important occasions: a wedding, a signing, a major interview.
  • You have bought many times without getting a good fit. If so, the problem is not the size but the ready-to-wear cut.

In that case, made-to-measure settles the matter: Mon Amie takes more than 30 measurements, or guides you through measuring by video if you live far away. You no longer need to convert XL or XXL, because the jacket is built to your own body.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing size by your shirt or T-shirt. Suit jacket size follows the chest and shoulders, which is very different from shirt size.
  • Going one size up to be “comfortable”. A loose suit jacket makes the shoulders droop and the body wrinkle.
  • Using last year's weight. Gain or lose a few kilos and your chest and belly are already different.
  • Forgetting the length code. An XL for a man 1.76 m tall differs from an XL for a man 1.68 m tall.

Tip from a Mon Amie master tailor: try the jacket in front of a mirror, then raise your arms to shoulder height. If the whole body of the jacket is pulled up with them, or the collar slides away from your neck, the shoulders are tighter than you thought. That alone tells you whether to try a bigger size or switch to a different cut, without looking at any number. For shirts, sizing works quite differently, because a shirt is sized by neck and sleeve rather than by chest and shoulders.
