What Is Super 150s? The 18.5–19 Micron Wool Grade

Super 150s is a fine wool grade of about 18.5–19 microns: a superbly smooth face, soft hand, light drape. How to recognise it and what it truly offers.

What is Super 150s? It is a fine wool grade with a fibre diameter of roughly 18.5–19 microns, giving an exceptionally smooth surface, a soft hand, light drape and a beautiful fall. For a man who wears a suit often, Super 150s strikes a genuinely valuable balance between the luxury of fine fibre and durability that still stands up to daily work.

What Super 150s is, and what the number 150 tells you

The "Super" system is the international wool trade's measure of fibre fineness: the higher the number, the finer the fibre. Super 150s corresponds to wool of about 18.5–19 microns — considerably finer than everyday suiting wool (usually 21–24 microns), but not yet as delicate as Super 180s or 200s.

Finer fibre means three things once woven: a smoother face, because more fibres occupy the same area; lighter cloth at the same thickness; and a more refined play of light across the surface. That is why a Super 150s suit reads as expensive even to someone who could not name the cloth — as Mon Amie likes to say, fine cloth feels luxurious long before anyone thinks to name it.

What Super 150s really gives you in a finished suit

Super 150s stands for refinement and superior quality, but its value lies in the wearing rather than the label:

  • Outstanding softness — fine fibres give an exceptionally smooth face, gentle to the touch and comfortable against the skin, with virtually no roughness or pilling.
  • Beautiful drape and fall — light cloth that falls softly and naturally with the body, drawing very clean lines.
  • Refined durability — fine yet strong when correctly woven; a tight construction compensates for the delicacy of the fibre.
  • A sense of luxury — a distinguished appearance and a high-quality feel in every detail, with no need for elaborate patterns or effects.

Super 150s is also flattering, breathable and comfortable in wear — the fine fibre structure allows excellent air movement, which suits Vietnam's heat and humidity when you must stay in a suit for many hours.

Six signs you are holding Super 150s

When choosing cloth in the showroom, you can check for yourself:

  1. An exceptionally smooth face — fine fibres create a sleek surface with a soft, very even sheen.
  2. Soft and cool to the touch — it feels soft, cool and gentle in the hand, never coarse.
  3. Natural drape — the cloth falls smoothly with the body, creating graceful lines; drape a length over your arm and you will see it at once.
  4. Deep, clean colour — colours read deep and clear rather than muddy, and keep their richness for years.
  5. Refined weave — a tight construction of fine, even yarns, evident in both the smoothness and the strength of the cloth.
  6. A high level of finish — the cloth cuts and sews well, giving crisp seams and consistently refined detailing.

What Super 150s is best suited to

This grade shows itself best in suits, blazers, tailored trousers, overcoats and travel wear. For business suits and event suits, Super 150s is close to ideal: refined enough for professional and formal settings, durable enough for weekly wear, and generous in drape, shape retention and crease resistance compared with finer grades.

A practical bonus: the cloth is lighter and more breathable while still giving proper coverage; its natural elasticity keeps the shape stable over the years; and it creases little, recovers quickly and looks well after every wearing — which keeps care costs modest too.

Fine cloth deserves finishing to match

A length of Super 150s only gives its full value when everything around it meets the same standard. At Mon Amie, suits made from this cloth always come with natural horn buttons for durability and refinement, fine silk lining for strength and a smoother feel, and meticulous, secure stitching attentive to every detail. Beautiful cloth with plastic buttons and cheap lining is like a fine watch on a poor strap — the whole never convinces.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

In practice, Mon Amie usually advises clients not to chase the highest Super number, but to choose the grade that matches how often they wear a suit. Super 150s is the sweet spot for the man in a suit three to five days a week: fine enough to lift his style without display, durable enough to be worn with confidence for years. Cloth woven properly and cut to the right shape — that is what genuinely elevates the wearer.

If you would like to feel for yourself how Super 150s differs from other grades, you are welcome at any of Mon Amie's five showrooms in Ho Chi Minh City (Nguyen Trai, Ho Van Hue, 3/2 Street, Caravelle Hotel District 1, Nguyen Thi Thap) or on 0888.111.118. You may book an appointment for a private consultation, and look through our pricing beforehand — full suits from VND 4.8 million up to cloths by Canonico, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil and Scabal.
