Made-to-measure (MTM) — tailoring built on an existing block — begins with a ready-made jacket and trouser pattern, then adjusts it to each client's measurements and preferences. Put another way, MTM is the practical bridge between ready-made clothing and the highest forms of tailoring: you gain a fit far better than ready-to-wear, at a sensible investment and in less time than bespoke.
How made-to-measure works
Unlike bespoke, where the tailor drafts an individual pattern from nothing, MTM starts from a block already studied carefully against common builds. From that block, the house adjusts the important specifications: sleeve length, jacket length, chest, waist, shoulder slope and back shape. You still choose the cloth, the lapel style, the button count, the lining and other personal details.
It should be said plainly: MTM is not a wholly individual pattern as bespoke is. But precisely because it works from a standardised block, the process is leaner, the fittings fewer, and the result still fits far better than a suit bought off the peg.
Five main values of block-based tailoring
- Sensible personalisation — adjusted to your measurements, your build and your own style, rather than forced into a standard size.
- A better fit than ready-made — closer to the body, flattering to the figure, and comfortable in movement.
- Faster than bespoke — a leaner process and a considerably shorter completion time.
- A realistic investment — more affordable than bespoke, yet delivering far more than ready-made.
- Well suited to building a lasting wardrobe — easy to repeat, easy to add to, consistent in fit and style from suit to suit.
How MTM differs from bespoke and ready-to-wear
The three routes to a suit can be summarised like this:
- Made-to-measure: an existing block adjusted to your measurements and personal choices. Its spirit is balance between fit, cost and time.
- Bespoke: a pattern drafted entirely for you, the deepest personalisation, a longer timeline and the finest experience the craft offers.
- Ready-to-wear: made in volume to standard sizes — quick, convenient, easy to buy, but with little scope for customisation.
No route is absolutely "correct"; each serves a different need and a different stage in a man's dressing life.
When to choose it — and when not to expect too much
MTM is the finest entry point for many clients, particularly when:
- You are stepping into tailoring for the first time and want a marked improvement on ready-made.
- You need a faster timeline than bespoke — before an important event, for instance.
- You want to build a business wardrobe evenly, with a consistent fit across several suits.
- You want a sensible investment while keeping a personal mark in the details.
Conversely, do not place too much on MTM when your build is unusually distinctive, when the fit demands go very deep, or when what you truly want is the experience of an individual pattern — in those cases bespoke is the right answer. A few misconceptions are worth clearing up too: MTM is not "altering ready-made clothing", it is not "cheap bespoke", and it cannot always resolve every build.
Who made-to-measure suits
- Young businessmen who need a professional, composed and credible image at work.
- Those beginning a tailored wardrobe — a perfect first step towards understanding tailoring and your own proportions.
- Frequent travellers who need something efficient, quick and consistent in appearance.
- Those seeking balance between fit, speed, cost and personalisation.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
In Mon Amie's experience, the first measuring session decides most of the quality of an MTM suit — wear a well-fitting shirt and the shoes you wear to work, so the tailor reads your natural stance correctly. Your measurements are kept by Mon Amie for life, so from the second suit onwards, ordering again comes down to choosing cloth and confirming details. And if anything is not quite right after delivery, the alteration guarantee is always there to bring the suit to the fit you want.
MTM is not the final destination, but it is the wisest step for many gentlemen on the tailoring journey. At Mon Amie you can begin with the Kevinlli line, full suits from VND 4.8 million, or move up with cloth collections from Canonico, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil and Scabal at our five showrooms in Ho Chi Minh City.
