What is a side seam? It is the vertical seam down the flank of a garment, joining the front and back panels, and it governs how closely the garment fits, how it drapes and how balanced it appears overall. In tailoring it is one of the most powerful seams there is: a small adjustment at the side can noticeably change how an entire suit feels.
What is a side seam within the structure of a jacket
Lay a jacket flat and you will see the front and back as two (or more) separate pieces of cloth, joined by a seam running from the armhole down to the hem on either side — that is the side seam. On trousers, the side seam runs down the leg from waistband to hem. Because it sits exactly where the body curves most — chest, waist, hip — this seam carries most of the responsibility for shaping the silhouette.
The value of the side seam lies in it being the most adaptable seam of all. A single seam can markedly change the shape of a garment, improving fit while keeping everything looking natural. Specifically:
- Adjusting closeness: taken in or let out to reach the ideal fit.
- Improving drape: helping the cloth fall straight and softly.
- Optimising balance: calibrating the relationship between chest, waist and hip.
- Raising elegance: producing a trim, refined shape.
Six ways the side seam changes the fit
- Taking in or letting out the waist: trimming or easing the waist for a slim, balanced line — the most common jacket alteration of all.
- Balancing the chest: making the chest fit properly, neither strained nor slack, so it feels comfortable.
- Balancing the hip: easing the hip so it is never tight, while keeping the cloth falling straight.
- Improving the back: drawing the back closer, reducing surplus cloth and unwanted breaks.
- Increasing freedom of movement: letting out in the right places for easy movement without losing shape.
- Raising elegance: producing a smooth flank line, a trim silhouette and a well-groomed look.
A technical point worth noting: a well-made bespoke jacket usually carries seam allowance at the side seam (typically 2–4 cm on each side), meaning several centimetres of total scope for letting out — which is why the side seam is always the first door a tailor opens when a client's weight changes.
Why the side seam matters so much
- It creates a trimmer, better-balanced silhouette.
- It lets a garment sit close while remaining comfortable.
- It reveals a tailor's refinement of technique.
- It accommodates the body's changes over the years.
- It keeps the whole garment harmonious and refined.
- It is the first step towards more complex adjustments.
The side seam shows most on jacket bodies, trousers, dresses, coats and waistcoats — almost any structured garment relies on it for shape.
A side seam done properly demands real skill: the seam must run true to the grain, the cloth must pass naturally through the curves without rippling or puckering. Compared with other details, the side seam is easy to adjust and forgiving of change, yet its effect is exceptional — one small alteration makes a clear difference to the whole. Over the years, this seam also holds the garment's shape as the body gains or loses weight.
The side seam among the details that define quality
On a finished jacket the side seam does not stand alone. It works alongside the details that signal quality: durable, elegant natural horn buttons, fine silk lining that adds strength and comfort, and meticulous, sound, refined stitching in every detail. When you pick up a jacket and look inside along the flank — the evenness of the stitches, the treatment of the raw edges — you are looking straight at the standard of the workshop.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
In the Mon Amie workshop we like to say that most improvements in fit begin at the side seam. When a client returns after a few years with a changed figure, the side seam is usually where we lay chalk first — because Mon Amie leaves allowance deliberately at the cutting stage, precisely for these occasions. That is why our alteration guarantee and lifetime measurement records have practical meaning rather than being a mere promise.
If you would like a suit considered from its very first seam, you are welcome to book an appointment at one of Mon Amie's five showrooms in Ho Chi Minh City (Nguyen Trai, Ho Van Hue, 3/2 Street, Caravelle Hotel District 1, Nguyen Thi Thap) or call 0888.111.118.
