How should you dress to look straighter-shouldered and trimmer?

Straight shoulders and a trim figure come from shoulder padding cut to your real slope, balanced lapels, one vertical column of colour and a clear waist — not from tight clothes.

The shoulders are the "hanger" of the entire suit: when they sit right, everything below falls right; when they are wrong, no cloth or accessory can rescue the outfit. Many men have sloping shoulders, uneven shoulders, or a slight desk-worker stoop — and the good news is that clothing, above all a tailored suit, can correct most of it. Mon Amie explains exactly how.

The short answer

To look straighter-shouldered and trimmer, you need four things: a jacket whose shoulder structure is cut to your real shoulder slope (sloping shoulders take slightly thicker padding; uneven shoulders take different padding on each side), medium-to-wide lapels opening across the chest to pull the eye horizontal, one unbroken vertical column of colour (jacket and trousers in the same tone, or a tie matching the jacket) to slim the body, and a clearly defined waist — the button at the natural waist, the jacket gently shaped there. Tight clothes will not make you trimmer; they only reveal more of what you meant to conceal.

Fixing the shoulders — the foundation of posture

Jacket shoulders come in three levels of structure: natural (unpadded), lightly padded, and structured in the English manner. For sloping shoulders or a slight stoop, moderate padding lifting the shoulder line by 1–2 cm is enough to suggest a straight back — overdo it and you are wearing armour.

  • Sloping shoulders: slightly thicker padding than standard, with a gently squared shoulder point.
  • Uneven shoulders (very common — posture and a dominant arm): the tailor measures each side separately and pads up the lower one — something no ready-made suit can ever do.
  • A mild stoop: extra room across the back and a collar recut to hug the neck, so the jacket does not pull and crease behind, while the front shoulder is curved to your true posture.

Slimming the figure with vertical lines and a waist

Once the shoulders are handled, the principle is simple: add vertical lines, subtract horizontal ones.

  • An unbroken colour column: a suit in one colour always looks trimmer than separates. If you do wear separates, keep both pieces at the same depth of tone.
  • Lapels and tie: medium-to-wide lapels draw two diagonals up toward the shoulders, widening them and filling the chest; a dark tie sets a vertical axis down the centre.
  • A defined waist: the jacket shaped gently at the waist (a fist should just fit inside the fastened button) creates shoulder-to-waist contrast — a trimmer look with the same measurements.
  • Straight-falling trousers: minimal break (none or a quarter) and clean hems — straight legs make the whole figure read straight.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing tight clothes to look "trim": strained cloth wrinkles at chest and back, spotlighting exactly the stomach and sloping shoulders you meant to hide.
  • Choosing oversized shoulders to hide your build — when the shoulder point falls off the bone, the whole jacket collapses and the figure looks sloppier still.
  • Stuffing your pockets: every phone, wallet, and key ring is a bulge that breaks the suit's vertical lines.
  • Ignoring posture: the finest jacket loses to hunched shoulders — the artisan cuts to your best stance, not your worst.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

At Mon Amie, each shoulder's slope is measured separately at the very first appointment, because more than half our clients have uneven shoulders without knowing it — usually from carrying a bag on one side or from their dominant arm in sport. For long-time desk workers with a forward lean, we curve the front shoulder more and ease the back panel, so the jacket moves with the real posture instead of fighting it. The result is a suit that looks upright while staying comfortable through a full day — which is what straight shoulders truly mean.

Frequently asked questions

My shoulders are uneven — can a ready-made suit be altered? Partially, by adding padding to the lower side, but the best result is a new suit with each shoulder cut separately from the start.

Should a slim man choose unpadded Italian shoulders? If his shoulders are naturally square, yes; a slim man with sloping shoulders needs light padding to build a frame — unpadded cloth will trace the slope exactly.

Which colours make the figure look trimmest? Unbroken dark tones — navy, charcoal, midnight blue — worn in one tone from top to bottom give the strongest slimming effect.
