The final fitting is the last try-on before handover, where the tailor reviews the overall fit, the proportions and every detail to make sure the garment is truly finished. It is the final confirmation of a suit that fits properly and stands right. A suit is only truly complete when it sits correctly on the person wearing it.
What the final fitting does
The last try-on has four tasks:
- An overall review: assessing the full silhouette, the lines and the balance once the suit is on your body.
- Confirming proportion: making sure the proportions harmonise with your build and personal style.
- Perfecting the details: a close look at the tailoring details, the seams and the finish.
- Readiness for handover: the garment meets the standard before entering its final stage.
Why this step exists
Many gentlemen assume accurate measurements are enough. The craft says otherwise:
- Every build has refinements that the tape measure alone cannot reveal.
- Only when the suit is worn can each detail be judged properly on a living body that breathes and moves.
- Body proportions can shift slightly over the course of the commission, especially on orders that span several weeks.
- The ultimate goal is comfort, confidence and a flawless appearance — not the numbers on a measurement sheet.
- It is the step that affirms the quality and professionalism of the tailor.
What is checked
During the final fitting, the tailor works through five areas in turn:
- Sleeves: sleeve length, the amount of cuff showing and the fit through the upper arm. After adjustment, just the right amount of cuff shows and the sleeve sits cleaner and more balanced.
- Trousers: length, break and the taper from thigh to hem. After adjustment, the leg line falls straight and clean with a proper break.
- Shoulders and chest: the shoulder line, the openness of the chest and the overall balance of the upper body. After adjustment, the shoulder hugs more naturally and the front lies flat and neat.
- Back: how the back fits, the flare of the skirt and the natural fall of the cloth. After adjustment, the collar and shoulders follow the back more closely and the standing posture looks tidier.
- The whole: posture, movement and how the suit actually feels in wear.
How a final fitting unfolds
- The full try-on: you wear the complete outfit — jacket, trousers and waistcoat if there is one — for an overall assessment.
- Detail check: the tailor examines the key points — sleeves, trousers, shoulders, chest, back.
- Fine adjustment: marking and refining the points that need it, often by just a few millimetres.
- Final confirmation: a last full review and sign-off before finishing.
How to make the fitting count
- Bring the shoes and accessories you will actually wear, since trouser length depends directly on heel height.
- Wear something light underneath; a thick layer distorts the fit.
- Move, sit down, raise your arms — test comfort in real postures, not just standing still.
- Speak up clearly about anything you are not happy with; the more specific, the better.
- Trust the tailor's experience when what you feel and what the eye sees do not quite agree.
The value of getting the last step right
A proper final fitting delivers a fit precise to your body, a perfect balance between shoulders, chest, waist, hips and length, elevates the whole tailoring experience, and creates lasting value: a garment finished to standard will keep its beauty over time. This step applies to both bespoke and made-to-measure commissions.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
At Mon Amie, the final fitting is the moment when tailor and client look in the same direction at the mirror — not a hunt for mistakes. We refine down to the lining itself, because the difference between "fits" and "fits well" often lies in a few millimetres. Your measurements and adjustment notes are kept on file for life, so every future suit will be closer to right from the very first try-on.
