What Is a Pre-Wedding Consultation? Before Your Groom Suit

A pre-wedding consultation is an in-depth session before commissioning a wedding suit. Mon Amie explains its six subjects and why to book early.

A pre-wedding consultation is an in-depth conversation between client and stylist to establish the style, requirements, timeline and other essentials before any wedding garment is commissioned. For a groom it is the foundation: every decision on design, cloth, cut and budget is agreed early, so the making runs smoothly and the result matches expectation.

What a pre-wedding consultation is, and how it unfolds

Unlike a casual visit to browse cloth, a pre-wedding consultation is a structured working session. You and your stylist sit together with the swatch books, the design portfolio and a planning schedule — so that by the time the shears touch the first length of cloth, everything is settled. Because this stage shapes the entire wedding wardrobe, getting the decisions right at the outset avoids errors, saves time and makes the busy months before the wedding far easier on you.

Six subjects covered in a pre-wedding consultation

  • Style and colour. Establishing the style and palette that suit the theme of the celebration and your own character — classic or modern, deep navy or light beige, in keeping with the bride's gown and the venue.
  • Design and cloth. Choosing the design, cloth and details appropriate to the season and setting: an air-conditioned ballroom asks for something quite different from an outdoor reception in the dry season.
  • Measurement and figure. Detailed measuring and an assessment of your figure to optimise proportion and comfort — this step decides how flattering the finished jacket will be.
  • Timeline and tasks. Agreeing the schedule, the number of garments and the key dates: first fitting, final fitting, collection day.
  • Budget and plan. Advice on a sensible budget and a clear plan of execution, from everyday cloths to the great mills.
  • Details and accessories. Selecting the details and accessories that complete the look: buttons, bow ties, pocket squares, boutonnières.

Six reasons an early consultation leads to better wedding style

  • A clear direction. Style, palette and level of formality are settled from the start.
  • The right cloth. Enough time to choose the best cloth for the details and silhouette you want.
  • Better fit and figure. Measuring and adjusting early gives a garment that fits, flatters and feels effortless.
  • Planning on your terms. A clear timeline keeps you in control of dates, fittings and completion.
  • Fewer errors and omissions. Less risk of confusion over design, details and personal requests once making begins.
  • Confidence and calm. Knowing everything has been prepared carefully lets you enjoy the day itself.

How far ahead should you book the consultation

Mon Amie's experience: ideally two to three months before the wedding. That window allows an unhurried choice of cloth — including special orders from Canonico, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil or Scabal — room for two or three fittings, and margin for last-minute adjustments should your figure change before the day. If your schedule is tighter, say so plainly at the consultation and your stylist will build a plan around the time you actually have.
