The final fitting is the last try-on before delivery, where every detail of the suit is checked and adjusted to the highest degree of precision. If you have ever wondered what an artisan is actually looking at during this appointment, what follows is the six-point final fitting checklist Mon Amie applies to every garment before it is handed over.
Why the last fitting needs a checklist
Every body, posture and manner of movement is different. Two men with identical measurements may still stand, sit and gesture differently — and those differences only reveal themselves once the near-finished suit is on. Small corrections at this final stage make a great difference in real wear on the day that matters. This is also the step that protects the value of the whole commission and the confidence of the wearer: the garment must be right in silhouette, comfort and appearance before it leaves the workshop.
Six points checked at the final fitting
- Silhouette — the overall line. We assess the jacket as a whole for balance and flattery. The artisan steps back and views you from the front, the back and both sides as though you were a sculpture: the outline must run unbroken, with no abrupt breaks.
- Shoulders and arm. The shoulder, armhole and sleeve are adjusted for natural, easy movement. You will be asked to raise your arms, fold them, offer a handshake — the shoulder must not lift when you move.
- Lapels and collar. The lapels and collar are set to lie flat and close without constriction. The jacket collar should hug the shirt collar, leaving about a centimetre of shirt showing above — the classic sign of a well-made jacket.
- Waist and chest. The waist and chest are refined so the jacket sits close without pulling. Diagonal creases around the fastened button signal a jacket too tight; a hollow, ballooning body signals the reverse.
- Trousers. Length, leg line and closeness are adjusted to create a perfect fall. Where the hem meets the shoe — full break, half break or no break — is settled with the actual shoes you will wear.
- Details — the finishing. The small things are completed: buttons, buttonholes, pockets, seams, lining. Few people notice them, but anyone who knows will.
Six reasons the final fitting protects the whole look
- It ensures a precise, perfectly balanced silhouette.
- It optimises comfort standing, seated and in motion.
- It catches and resolves small details before delivery.
- It makes the garment photograph and film at its best.
- It adds confidence and presence on the important day.
- It protects the value of the garment and the work behind it.
How to prepare for your final fitting
A good deal of the outcome rests with you. Bring the exact shoes and shirt you will wear with the suit at the event, since trouser length and collar are set against them. Stand as you normally do; do not straighten up more than usual — the artisan needs to see your true posture. And never hesitate to mention anything that feels less than comfortable, however small: after this appointment, every adjustment becomes harder once the suit has gone with you to the occasion. At Mon Amie, every garment comes with an alteration guarantee, and your measurements are kept for life, so each subsequent commission is more precise still.
A word from Mon Amie's artisans
There is a phrase we repeat to one another in the Mon Amie workshop: the last adjustments are usually what separate "handsome" from "exact". A suit that looks beautiful on a mannequin is not necessarily exact on your moving body. The final fitting is where we turn a workshop product into your garment — and we do not hand it over until all six points satisfy us.
