What Is a Deposit? Its Role When You Commission a Suit

A deposit confirms your commission, secures a place in the workshop schedule and opens the commitment between client and tailor.

A deposit is the payment that confirms an order and commits both sides to beginning the work. It is the step that secures a place in the production schedule, gives your commission priority and ensures the best possible experience. As Mon Amie puts it: a deposit does not only hold an order, it holds the promise that a suit of your own has begun.

What a deposit means in the tailoring journey

With ready-to-wear, you pay and take the garment home. With made-to-measure, the garment does not yet exist when you order — it only begins to take shape once both sides commit. The deposit carries four roles:

  • Confirming commitment: affirming your agreement on design, cloth and timing.
  • Securing the schedule: holding a place in the workshop's calendar — cloth is cut and canvas built in the proper order.
  • Priority of service: guaranteeing your commission its place in the queue and the attention it deserves.
  • Assuring the experience: creating certainty and continuity from measuring through to delivery.

The value of commitment

A deposit is not an administrative way of collecting money; it is how both sides show they are in earnest:

  • A mark of respect: the client's seriousness about the garment and the service.
  • Momentum for quality: it allows the team to give the work their full concentration.
  • Trust established: commitment on both sides is the foundation of a lasting relationship.
  • A better experience: a clear, transparent process leaves the client more at ease.

Why a tailoring house asks for a deposit

Five reasons the deposit exists in every serious house:

  • It confirms the order formally and prevents commissions being confused with one another.
  • It allows the workshop to plan production and prepare materials — with cloth imported from mills such as Canonico, Holland & Sherry, Dormeuil and Scabal, reserving and cutting must be confirmed in advance.
  • It guarantees the client priority in both timing and quality.
  • It shows respect for the time, effort and value on both sides.
  • It keeps the work running smoothly, professionally and to schedule.

How the deposit works at Mon Amie

The deposit is one link in a clear chain of five steps:

  1. Consultation and selection: discussing your needs and choosing silhouette, cloth and details.
  2. Quotation and agreement: a detailed quote, with the order and completion date agreed.
  3. Order confirmation: signing to begin the work formally.
  4. Deposit payment: paying the deposit at Mon Amie's stated rate — the proportion depends on the value and type of garment.
  5. Confirmation and scheduling: with the deposit received, the order is given its place in the production schedule and work begins.

Deposits apply across many kinds of order: bespoke commissions personalised in every detail to your own measurements, wedding orders requiring careful preparation and precise timing, VIP bookings with priority service, and corporate uniform production run to a defined plan and schedule.

What to keep in mind when paying a deposit

  • The deposit rate depends on the value and type of garment — ask about it as soon as you receive the quotation.
  • Deposits are non-refundable if the client cancels, because cloth cut to your own measurements cannot readily be used for anyone else.
  • Production time is counted from the moment the deposit is confirmed, not from the consultation.
  • Any change after the deposit should be raised and agreed as early as possible.
  • Keep your receipt for reference should it be needed.

In return, a deposit at Mon Amie brings you: a transparent, clear and professional process; priority in timing and quality; skilled tailors and attentive service; a personalised experience from beginning to end; and a garment worthy of your trust — with alteration cover and measurements kept on file for life.

A word from Mon Amie's artisans

To a tailor, the deposit is the signal to begin: from that moment the bolt of cloth bearing your name comes down to the cutting table and does not go back on the shelf. We honour that commitment by keeping every date we have promised. A commission confirmed clearly always yields a finer suit.
